LUGARNO PUBLIC SCHOOL 75TH ANNIVERSARY
Whilst 31st October 2008 was the schools true 75th anniversary there was a special celebration picnic held on the preceding Friday in the school grounds.
Features included guided school tours, a displays of school memorabilia, a vintage car display and entertainment by students including school dance and band performances. A highlight was a performance by Colin Buchanon from Playhouse Disney, a former student of the school. A family bush dance followed to complete the celebrations.
Community support was given from Lugarno Lions with a sausage sizzle and St Stephens Church who provided Devonshire teas. Lugarno Progress Association’s display of historical photos of Lugarno was of great interest to a number of visitors. A special celebration church service was held on Sunday 26th at St Stephens.
It was only fitting that the Lugarno Progress Association play a special part in Lugarno Public School’s 75th Anniversary Celebrations. A strong relationship continues between the Association and the School since the establishment of the school was a result of pressure brought to bear on the Government of the day by the Association together with district members of Parliament.
A special anniversary cap was mooted and the emblem designed around a drawing of a tree from student Natalie Grzetic. The emblem displayed the initials LPA and LPS, 1933-2008 under the words “Keeping Lugarno Green”. A cap was given to each student currently attending the school.
Colouring, Poster and Writing Competitions were also sponsored by the Association and book prizes were awarded to the winning entries. The posters will be used to market the LPA’s campaign for 2009 in which it hopes to return some “green” to Lugarno by working in conjunction with Hurstville City Council on special tree planting days and encouraging local residents to appreciate and nurture the natural environment for which Lugarno has become known.
Students also received a small native plant each supplied to us from Councils Bushcare nursery.
A special school assembly was held on the actual anniversary date when presentations were made to competition winners and the caps and native plants distributed.
