Clean Up Australia Day 2008
Following much uncertainty about the weather, Clean Up Australia Day 2008, proved one of the most successful so far for Lugarno Progress Association.
Regardless of the amount of publicity posted around the area, only a small number of
volunteers turned up at the Evatt Park site. Those few however managed to collect about 10 bags of assorted rubbish.
The steadfast Lugarno Lions arrived at Webbs Dam around 11.30 a.m. to set up their barbecue followed shortly after by Margaux Park, Hurstville City Councils Waste Projects Coordinator who arrived with the food and drinks. After 12 p.m. volunteers from other sites in the area began to arrive and join in the "thank you bbq". Around 50 in all.
The event was almost ready to wind up when a group of some 30 volunteers arrived after their morning service from Penshurst Anglican Church. Not only did they help consume what would have been left over sausages but they donned gloves, applied sunscreen and set off down to the river led by Rob Clarsen, LPA President. About 45 minutes later the group returned having collected approximately 40 bags of rubbish which included three bike wheels, a bike frame and a plastic pallet. They say many hands make light work well that certainly was the case in this instance.
All the supplies of volunteer forms, gloves and bags were used which meant no resources were wasted and the shared community spirit made for a most enjoyable and productive day.
